Hastings Caves - Make a Day of It, when exploring the Huon Valley

I first visited the caves in my childhood and have been back a number of times since, including taking my own children to experience the Thermal Pool at the very least.   Hastings caves are a Dolomite cave and thermal spring system about 3/4 hour south of Huonville. Its important to try not to rush the visit so leave a day to get there and back.  Staying at Riverfront Estate makes a perfect base for a day tour of Hastings Caves.   Newdegate cave - the jewel of the Hastings Caves State reserve is a multi-levelled dolomite cave delicately decorated with crystal straws and stalactites.   Hastings caves is the largest Dolomite show-cave in the Sothern Hemisphere. There are guided tours lasting 45minitues, fees do apply.   As well as the caves there are easy walks around the areas with lovely ferny man fern glades.   Look for the local platypus in the creek, but best of all take a dip in the thermal pool with a year round temperature of 28degs.    Take a picnic lunch to use t

Huon River Anglers Access Guide

Getting There  The Huon River can be accessed at Huonville, approximately 40 km south of Hobart via the A6. Background  Flowing 100 kilometres from Lake Pedder to the D’Entrecasteaux Channel in south-east Tasmania, the Huon River threads through country ranging from wilderness to cultivated orchards and pasture. In 1887 Governor Sir Robert Hamilton landed a brown trout in the Huon River that weighed 13 kg and measured over 900 mm in length. This is still the largest brown trout landed in Tasmania and Australia Recreational Fishery Management  The Huon River is managed as a wild trout fishery. The Huon River is also recognised as a recreational whitebait fishery. Separate rules and regulations apply to whitebait check the Inland Fishery Service (IFS) website for details on when the season is open for both white bait and trout.  As its within the IFS control you do require a license when fishing above the seaward details outlined below. Some Unusal Flora at River Front Estate

This is one of our unusal garden members, Kowhai Tree from NZ, or Sophora microphylla is a species of flowering plant in the family Fabaceae, native to New Zealand, it has been in the garden for many years and while it hasn't grown to the height suggested of 8m, it has amazing yellow flowers that come out in early spring.  As to how it got into the garden at Riverfront estate Huon Valley accommodation, I reckon it was my grandmothers doing.

Project X Promotion - Background During the summer of 2019 dry lightning strikes ignited a significant number of bushfires in southern Tasmania, threatening communities in the Huon Valley, creating major disruption and causing considerable damage across many remote wilderness areas. The aftermath of the fires have impacted significantly on tourism and visitation numbers in the region, triggering an enduring, damaging effect on local businesses in the Valley. Project X is a DarkLab initiative established through the support of combined State and Federal funding to reinvigorate visitation into the Huon Valley region after the devastating impact of the 2019 summer fires. Project X comprises a series of major artworks from high profile artists installed throughout the Valley designed to bring visitors back into the region, connecting them to the unique natural values of the region’s environment, whilst experiencing immersive works of art. Why Is the Huon River such a great spot to fish

That's easy, the Huon River. This is a spring afternoon on the banks of the Huon River.  This shot shows why its such a great river to fish in the summer  This afternoon the white bait, a small bait fish were running up and down the river banks.  This could mean its likely to be a great trout season with this sort of early movements of bait fish. So if you are looking for some accommodation in the Huon Valley as a base for you fishing holiday in consider booking  Riverfront Estate  over the Xmas or New Year period.

Cycling the Huon Valley - Discovered Southern Tasmania rich cycle touring territory

There are many cycling opportunities in the Huon Valley, depending on your skill level or requirements.  The Huon Valley nestles under the reclining profile of Sleeping Beauty, the poetic name of the bordering mountain range. So it’s appropriate that the valley has been known for its apples and now its boutique cider houses: Willie Smiths near Huonville, Franks out of Franklin and Pagan Cider in Cygnet. Willie Smiths is on this route and hosts local entertainment on Friday nights and monthly on Sundays. The local ciders all use apples, pears and cherries but are quite different.  You can set out from Riverfront Estate in the morning and do a very relaxing ride of approximately 28klm  Riding up to Summer Kitchen bakery and cafĂ© in Ranelagh for breakfast and a coffee, then continue up the river, noticing the dark flow of the Huon River with tannins, making any amount of reflective photo opportunities on a still day. You can arrive at Judbury and cross the Huon River and then head back

Fishing Holiday In Southern Tasmania - Huon Valley

Brown Trout (including sea runners, which taste the best), Rainbow Trout, Brook Trout and Atlantic Salmon are all found in the local rivers in southern Tasmania. The best river is by far the Huon River as it present to most opportunity to catch a number of species.  Soft plastic lure  fishing  is now the predominant style used to catch trout and salmon in Southern Tasmania, but the largest fish have been caught on fly and spinning lures. The Huon River still hold the Australian record for the largest brown trout taken in Australia.  During the summer you now find many sea run species starting to venture up the Huon river chasing the local white bait.  For those that like to wait there are also the Bream and local eels population that make a nice game fish or a meal depending on your requirements.  But the real opportunity is chasing the large Brown Trout, we had more success  with the dark drown spinning lures with some very large trout taken on the banks of Riverfront Estate or take t
