Hobart – Huonville

Depart Hobart on the Southern Outlet (A6) towards Kingston and follow the signs to Huonville, a drive of around 30 minutes.
On the way, stop at the Huon Valley Apple and Heritage Museum at Grove and discover the traditions behind the once flourishing apple orchards of the region.
In Huonville, take a thrilling (and sometime peaceful) jet boat ride on the Huon River – a great way to admire this beautiful river scape, complete with Huon pines. This now rare species is one of the oldest living things on earth, with some more than 2,000 years old.

Nearby, enjoy the region's produce at Home Hill Winery Restaurant at Ranelagh, with its stunning architecture and a menu of local Huon Valley seasonal produce – salmon, oysters, beef, trout, lamb, fruits and vegetables, including the famed Huon Valley mushrooms – all served in a picture-postcard  rural setting.

Beyond Huonville lies the historic township of Franklin, with its fascinating Wooden Boat Centre and Boat Building School, where shipwrights impart traditional skills to students from around the world.
Further on at Geeveston, the Forest and Heritage Centre is a must for anyone interested in the state's forest industries.

Drive 30 minutes farther, through a working forest, to Tahune Adventures. Fly like an eagle in a hang glider attached to a 220 metre cable above a 70 metre high forest, the Huon River below, or take an exhilarating walk through the tree canopy on the AirWalk. Please note, site currently closed, see website for opening date.

Fish & Chips in Huonville

Tangaroa Kai -Strictly Seafood - I have had fish and chips a few times from these lovey ladies, they park just down from the Globe Hotel on the Esplanade in Huonville.  They have fresh fish from Dover Wharf.  They are only there until 7:00pm and only on Thursday, Fridays, Saturdays & Sundays.  They have a web page Strictly Seafood . Keep an eye out if you want some really nice fish and chips.  Makes a nice meal to take back to your accommodation at  Riverfront Estate .

Why Is the Huon River such a great spot to fish

That's easy, the Huon River. This is a spring afternoon on the banks of the Huon River.  This shot shows why its such a great river to fish in the summer  This afternoon the white bait, a small bait fish were running up and down the river banks.  This could mean its likely to be a great trout season with this sort of early movements of bait fish. So if you are looking for some accommodation in the Huon Valley as a base for you fishing holiday in consider booking  Riverfront Estate  over the Xmas or New Year period.

The Block Steakhouse

The block steakhouse has opened in the old Huon Manor restaurant.  The block steakhouse is located on the corner of Short St and Huon Highway, directly opposite the Grand Hotel.  Finally we are getting some exciting food choices coming back to the valley.   The focus is on Tasmanian Produce.  So if you are looking for an exciting new food venue have a look at The Block Steakhouse.  Your accommodation needs at Riverfront Estate are less that 100m up Short St, so within easy walking distance.
