Why Huonville Is Becoming Tasmania’s Next Must‑Visit Wine Destination

If you love cool‑climate wines, slow travel and scenic cellar doors, Huonville is quietly becoming one of Tasmania’s most exciting places to explore. Tucked in the heart of the Huon Valley, this region blends boutique vineyards, orchard‑driven cider houses and river views that feel straight out of a postcard.

What makes Huonville special isn’t just the wine — it’s the atmosphere. Small‑batch producers, peaceful rural roads, and tastings that feel personal rather than commercial. It’s the kind of place where you meet the winemaker, not a tour bus.

Here’s a closer look at the vineyards and cider houses that are putting Huonville on the map.

Home Hill Winery — The Region’s Icon

Known for award‑winning Pinot Noir and a restaurant overlooking the vines, Home Hill is the Huon Valley’s flagship winery. It’s elegant, relaxed and perfect for long lunches.

Kate Hill Wines — A Huonville Favourite

Set inside a restored apple shed, Kate Hill Wines offers cool‑climate Pinot, Chardonnay and sparkling. It’s one of the closest cellar doors to Huonville and ideal for a quick tasting stop.

Elsewhere Vineyard — Slow, Scenic, Beautiful

Rolling hills, wildlife, and handcrafted wines define this Glaziers Bay gem. It’s a favourite for travellers who want a peaceful, unhurried tasting experience.

Two Bud Spur — Tiny but Memorable

A small, family‑run vineyard producing expressive Pinot Noir. If you love discovering hidden gems, this one belongs on your list.

Panorama Vineyard — Views for Days

Overlooking the Huon River, this cellar door offers one of the most scenic tasting spots in the region. Quiet, intimate and perfect for golden‑hour visits.

Heriots Point — Wine by the Water

A riverside vineyard near Cygnet with gentle views and a laid‑back vibe. Great for a relaxed afternoon.

Cider Houses Worth Adding to Your Route

Huonville sits in the heart of apple country, so cider is part of the culture here.

  • Pagan Cider — premium craft cider made from local fruit
  • Willie Smith’s Apple Shed — cider museum, distillery and restaurant
  • Frank’s Cider House — historic orchard family with award‑winning cider
